The Leiden University Medical Center
Various parts of research into cervical cancer come together in the Againts cervical cancer (Acca) program of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). This internationally renowned university hospital has extensive experience in treating many different cancers. This is where top quality research should produce an effective vaccine against cervical cancer. Research is also conducted into the pathological characteristics, diagnostics and treatment of the tumor itself. The LUMC boasts a longstanding tradition in successfully cooperating with other institutions, both in Western and in Third World countries.
The LUMC combines various trends that would appear to be contradictory: tradition and innovation, basic research and medical applications, specialized technology and wide applications. The hospital has a tradition of over four centuries of medical history, and strives to maintain this position in the future by contributing to the development of medical science. It comprises an ideal combination of research institute, educational center and a hospital that is specialized in caring for patients with conditions that are difficult to treat.
Within the LUMC, internationally renowned research is conducted in the fields of genetic, immunology and oncology. Students are trained to become doctors or medical scientists, in the course of which, self-motivation and an in dependant and critical attitude are encouraged. Together with the daily contact with patients, this stimulates medical scientists to develop innovative solutions to important medical problems.
