Additives increase effectiveness

Another important insight from basic immunological research is used in developing a vaccine against cervical cancer. The ultimate objective of vaccination is to activate those lymphocytes that are capable of detecting and destroying the deviation. In order to archieve this, another type of cell needs to be stimulated first; the antigene presenting cell (APC). These cells, with their 'branched' shape, can pick up deviant proteins around them, present them to the immune cells and activate the lymphocytes. Recent research that partly took place in Leiden, has shown how antigene presenting cell can best be stimulated. Specific catalysts are added to the peptides to strongly enhance the effectiveness of of the vaccine. These additives are easy to keep and reasonably priced.
