Mrs. Pinas, Nieuw Nickerie, Surinam

"I have had pain in my belly and back for three months. Besides that I also noticed that I had blood loss after intercourse. I was troubled, this wasn’t right! I went to the nearest RGD clinic and talked to the nurse about my problems. She told me about cervical cancer and a screening programme to prevent this disease. She urged me to go to this screening and so I went. Well, the screening didn’t hurt. But when the doctor told me he saw white spots on my cervix I got scared.
I’ve heard of cervical cancer and a relative died from this disease. I was scared that these spots meant I was going to die as well. Fortunately the doctor put me at ease and explained what the spots meant and what he was able to do about it. He was going to treat me and the ‘sick cells’ would die. I was told the doctor would freeze sick cells inside of me. This had to be done in order to prevent that horrible disease. I wasn’t scared because the doctor reassured me, I would not feel any pain. And he was right, before I knew it, it was over.
I didn’t feel any pain and was able to pick my daughter from school just like any other day. I was glad that right after the examination I was treated because I work in a store and cannot take time of to come back for another appointment. I think the See&Treat is a very good programme. I told my friends and neighbours about it. I told them that even if you don’t have any complaints you can still have sick cells inside of you. I pointed them to the fact that it is very important to go to this screening. It is not a comfortable examination but you can prevent a lot of trouble with it! This horrible disease has to be prevented and now there is a way to do so."
